Wikky's Rig

I've been dusting off all of my gear. It's one of the reasons I decided to come back to the Endless-Online scene. I've spent a ton of time working and doing the whole real life thing. There was just no time for creativity. Endless for me was an opportunity to explore music, technology, audio, video, experimentation with emerging stuff.

One question that I get asked frequently in some of the e-mail I get is what I've got setup for gear and programs to do some of the things that I do. So I've gathered together a list of the tools that I use to bring the whole "frosty" experience to you.

1. The Brain

I'm running an HP i7 9GB machine. It's getting a little bit up there in years and I'm thinking about upgrading to something newer especially on the sound card and video card front but right now it's humming along nicely.

2. Audio/Video

I upgraded to a 24" LG monitor for a better video experience. A powered speaker set and some Sony MDR-XD400 studio headphones. For mics it depends on what I'm doing. My professional mics are usually packed away for other gigs but occasionally I bust out the Shures. Most of the time I've got a solid little Centrios dynamic mic that does the job.

I run that through an M-Audio Fast Track recorder that has low latency. I'm usually not too worried about balance since it's just a little voice or guitar. If I'm in the mood for serious recording I have a Behringer 8-track digital mixing board that I premix and connect my higher powered mics to.

For MIDI control I have a KAWAI FS690. It's 20 years old and I could upgrade but it is still built better than the cheap shit they put out today.

3. Programs

Photoshop and Premiere are the main tools in the library for the video side of things. For convenience I also will keep MSPaint open because it's quick and dirty. I'll even bust out Windows Movie Maker (I have both Live and 2.6 installed depending on what I need) since a half hour Premiere render for a quick and dirty sprite video is hardly worth the effort.

For audio recording I use Acoustica Mixcraft. Worth every penny of the investment for the MIDI controller capabilities, the add ons, and the mixing tools.

I used to use Audacity because it's free. I recommend it if you're starting out or if you don't have any cash. It will get you where you're going.

To capture video from your screen I use Debut Video Capture which is the right price (absolutely free) and gives you a lot of options. It's a little clunky but once you get used to it recording game play is easy.

4. Extra Gear

I've got a pile of instruments lying around and I'm not going to list them. My main studio guitar that you'll hear me play with is a Garrison G30-E. Mostly because it's sitting in the stand next to my machine and also because I love the way it sounds no matter how I run it into the computer. I can direct connect it, run it through the mixer, hell, I've even put it through the webcam mic and it still sounded great.

Those are the main things that I use. I'm thinking about getting a new phone and mic combo to do some recording outside the studio.

Hopefully that helps you out.
